Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) – Electrical & Computer Engineering (Artificial Intelligence)

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Delaware invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Artificial Intelligence. Applicants should have outstanding research contributions to AI and machine learning methodologies with impactful applications and the potential to deliver courses that bridge the foundations in signal processing, digital and physical systems, probability, and statistics to emerging and future AI technologies.

About UD and ECE

UD is a Carnegie R1 research university, and the College of Engineering consistently ranks among the nation’s top 50 programs. ECE offers undergraduate programs in electrical engineering, computer engineering, and cybersecurity engineering, and a newly launched Bachelor’s program in Artificial Intelligence Engineering. Research in ECE is often interdisciplinary, both within the College and across the University. Research areas of particular relevance include biomedicine, communications, controls, data science, high-performance computing, imaging, information retrieval, machine learning, neuroscience, robotics, signal processing, and remote sensing. UD’s Data Science Institute, the First State AI Institute, and interdisciplinary graduate programs foster a collaborative environment in research and education. Modern teaching and research facilities include space at UD’s FinTech Innovation Hub, shared with the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. 

Responsibilities

  • Develop a nationally visible, externally-funded research program in AI, with synergistic ties to ECE strengths, collaborations across UD, and external partners, including regional partners. 
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in ECE (especially courses in the AI Engineering curriculum).
  • Engage in scholarly service to the department, college, university, and profession.
  • Foster a collaborative research and learning environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field by the start date. 
  • Evidence of research excellence and potential for leadership in AI (e.g., top-tier publications, impactful software/data, recognition/awards) 
  • Commitment to teaching excellence.

Preferred Areas (one or more)

  • Large-scale machine learning: foundation models (including large language models, LLMS) for images, signals, time-series, and multimodal data 
  • Generative modeling, causal and statistical modeling at scale 
  • Reinforcement learning, autonomous and semi-autonomous systems, and human-centered AI in physical environments 
  • Other impactful applications of AI (machine learning for health, including medical imaging, remote sensing, security, etc.).
